Rising from the waters of the Mirabello Gulf just off the coast of Elounda, Spinalonga is one of Crete's most visited landmarks. Its story spans Venetian fortifications, Ottoman occupation and its final chapter as a leper colony — immortalised in Victoria Hislop's novel The Island.
